Image by Jordan Jameson With COVID-19 and #StayHome orders, a lot of freelance photographers around the world have been struggling to keep their photoshoot appointments or schedule new ones. Same is the case with Sawyer Reed Moss, a sophomore at Western Washington University and a part-time freelance photographer who usually gets a lot of photoshoots done during the weekends and breaks. Pre-spring break, she was in a similar routine, looking forward to completing many graduation photoshoots. Until so many regulations due to the virus hit her, not just her classes were switched to online instruction, she also met with having to cancel these photoshoots. Despite the cancellations, Sawyer has been trying her best to keep herself occupied and staying creative while finishing up her second year of classes in Business Administration and Entrepreneurship. She was able to do a photoshoot at home with her mother as her model, being able to try fresh ideas and stay in touch with photography. You can find few pictures of the photoshoot in the bottom of this blog post. She has also been keeping in touch with her relatives who are photographers to do FaceTime conversations and check out their #StayHome projects. Sawyer also expressed how this period of social distancing could change the way future photoshoots are being booked. She expects a lot of people to be hesitant to book photoshoots even when everything opens back up and travel might even be very limited, limiting the amount of photography projects for photographers. As of now, she is still looking to take pictures of her friends while maintaining social distance. Photography is something that needs no physical contact at all and it is possible to follow all rules while building that impressive portfolio. It seems like there should be plenty of time to be creative during this pandemic. Everyone else has the time to do something creative but somehow life as gotten in the way of personal creative goals, again. Maybe it’s work. Maybe its school, kids, finances, stress or something else. Remember that the amount of free time varies between people as we go through this pandemic together.
What staying creative looks like will change from person to person. There is no right way to stay creative. This can open many doors for creative possibilities, but it can also be stressful for some people because they might not know what to do or where to start. However, being creative is a good stress reliever. For me, school as drained my creativity with dead week and finals week around the corner, and the workload has increased my stress. To stay creative and reduce my stress, I have kept things simple. When I go on a walk, I try to take a few pictures. Those pictures might end up on Instagram but probably not. My roommate and I have done some stress baking. Our stuff has turned out well, but we like talking about what we might do differently next time. My roommate is also a vet student, so she randomly shares with me about the things she is learning. I told her that I have decided to share on social media the things she tells me. She has agreed to this and will continue to share random animal facts that I never would have Googled. These things might not be considered traditional creative activities, but that’s how I have stayed creative. When being creative is a struggle, it’s good to start small because creative activities do not need to be a big project. They can be simple such as coloring books or doodling. Being creative can include experimenting with a recipe, decorating cookies, or sharing about your living situation during this pandemic. Our goal is to inspire creativity during this time. We are asking people to share how they have stayed creative to help other people find creative outlets. Creativity is fun and a great way to relieve stress. It can help people make connects during this time. If you have a creative activity you enjoy doing, tag @_bokeh_lenson Instagram and use the hashtags #CreateBokeh #BookBokeh #Staycreativeathome Being stuck inside all day for quarantine is tough, but it encourages daydreams of traveling. While you stay inside and enjoy getting creative at home, we thought we’d help by starting a travel bucket list for you! 1. Paris - Paris is known by many as The City of Light, or La Ville-Lumière. Paris is known for its art and its elegant romantic elements. One of the most picturesque places in the city is the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower was originally supposed to be only a temporary art installation for the World Fair in 1889, but it’s still recognized as one of Paris’ most distinguishable landmarks. The Louvre is the largest art museum in the world, and was once the palace for the French royalty. The Mona Lisa resides here and is a must go to get a full experience of the art and culture of the city. The city is also home to the Notre Dame Cathedral. Paris is famous for its café culture. There are different cafés on every corner with tables spilling out onto the sidewalk. This is the perfect place to sip wine and eat French bread and snap some aesthetic pictures! 2. San Francisco - San Francisco is known for its mild summers, the beautiful red of the Golden Gate Bridge, its cable cars, and the steep hills. Some of the must do things here in this magical city include relaxing at Golden Gate Park, riding the cable cars, enjoying the culture of Chinatown, and eating the best chocolate in Ghirardelli Square. The Golden Gate Bridge is the perfect backdrop for photos and walking around the city on a sunny day while riding the cable cars are perfect for an perfect Instagram picture. This city is a city you have to visit after quarantine! 3. London - Another go-to destination for fantastic pictures and a wonderful time is London! London is known for its extensive history and the historical landmarks that can be found all over the city! The palace is right in the middle of the city, and the red phone booths always make for a perfect Insta worthy shot! The Tower Bridge is a must see in London, as is Buckingham Palace. Big Ben is a part of the Palace of Westminster and it’s a beautiful backdrop for pictures if you go down the road a little bit and can get all of it in your picture! 4. Hawaii - Hawaii is the world’s largest chain of islands with 132 islands, but only 7 of them are inhabited. We’ll be looking at one of the most common islands to visit in this post, Oahu. Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii and is located right on the famous Waikiki Beach. This beach is a picturesque place to take pictures with Diamond Head standing tall in the background. If you’re up for a hike, you can actually climb up Diamond Head crater and look out over the city. This view is unlike any others on the island. For a fun day trip, you can drive to the north shore. This is a perfect place to explore other beaches and to take pictures with the beautiful green Hawaiian mountains in the background. Although we can’t travel right now and see the world, we can start planning out future adventures and creating our bucket list. During quarantine, it can be easy to become bored but there are many activities you can do to keep yourself going. Today I am going to go over different things you can do while you are alone and at home. There are so many different creative ways to not only expand yourself but also keep yourself entertained.
1. Painting When it comes to art, painting is one of the leading creative contenders. While you may have never painted before there are very easy ways to learn and start from scratch. You can make anything a canvas including paper, wood, shoes, walls, and jeans. For beginners, it is a good start to print off stencils of shapes such as circles, flowers, stars or squares. It is so easy to use these stencils to form bigger pictures will all kinds of colors! 2. Video Creation In this day and age, everyone takes photos and videos of everything with their phone. With this extra time, it is a great opportunity to organize this random content into creative videos. You can use free apps such as iMovie, Adobe Spark Videos and VideoLeap. They have step-by-step instructions on how to use the apps and have awesome effects you can add to get extra creative. 3. Photography Grabbing a camera and shooting some fun photos is one of the best ways to be creative. Setting up an at-home photoshoot is super fun and only requires a camera. Try grabbing a sheet and setting it up as a backdrop then use props to add some dimension. Playing with light can also change the whole photo, use colored tissue paper, tin-foil or even a mirror!
